When I was a little girl my grandmother had this bush in her yard that always had things on it that looked like apples. She would always tell me that they were poisonous so I never had the nerve to eat one. There are so many common plants that are around us that we have no idea could actually kill us. Their beauty and fragrance will tantalize us and keep us happy, but underneath all of the sweetness is a danger that could unfold if you make one wrong move. Here are 10 poisonous plants to humans.

Castor Plant

It is in the Guinness World Record as the most poisonous plant and believe it or not, it is what castor oil is made from. One of its seeds can kill a child in two days and an adult in one to four days.


This is one of those beautiful flowers that could sneak up on you and put you in the hospital. They look like romantic cascading pink, white, or blue masses on a vine, but they are toxic if eaten and will cause cramps, nausea, diarrhea and worse.


My grandmother always had these all over the front yard and they looked like sweet smelling pom poms. If eaten it will cause a terrible belly ache, itchy skin, coma, and convulsions.

Rhododendron and Azaleas

This is a beautiful flowering bush found in the south in every yard. It can cause a great deal of pain if eaten. You could experience slowing heart rate and go into a coma as well as dim vision and headaches. The list goes on.

Angel’s Trumpets

They look like colorful trumpet-shaped flowers hanging from a tree and is commonly used as a hallucinogen. If you ingest too much you could die.

Water Hemlock

These are clusters of tiny white flowers that look like umbrellas. It causes seizures, tremors, vomiting, abdominal pain, and confusion. It can kill you in a matter of hours.


This plant can conceive you because it looks like a cherry tree. The black berries that it bears are deadly poisonous. It causes headaches, difficulty breathing, loss of voice, and convulsions. One leaf can kill you as well as the berries.

Lily of the Valley

This sweet looking flower is something I use to call tear drops as a child. The heads of the small white flowers droop down so playfully, but entire plant is toxic. It will cause abdominal pain, mouth pain, cramps, and vomiting.


These are lovely flowers that you may know by the name, mums. They are a common plant that will cause swelling, and itching, but they won’t kill you.


Sometimes known as daffodils, are yellow or white and will cause cramps, diarrhea, and nausea if eaten. Some people get them mixed up with onions and make themselves sick.
